The new academic year has officially kicked off at the MultiChoice Talent Factory (MTF) Academy Southern Africa, marking another exciting chapter in nurturing Africa’s next generation of filmmaking talent. This year, 20 promising students have embarked on a nine-month journey designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the film and television industry.
The Lusaka-based MTF Academy is one of just three such training hubs across the continent, alongside its sister academies in Lagos (West Africa) and Nairobi (East Africa). Since its inception in 2018, the MTF programme has gained a reputation as a launchpad for creative excellence, consistently producing graduates who go on to make their mark in the industry.
This year’s curriculum has been updated to better meet the needs of both students and the evolving media landscape. The programme now combines six months of online learning with three months of intensive, in-person training. Importantly, the course remains accredited through the University of Zambia, ensuring students receive formal recognition for their hard work and achievement.
Kemi Omotosho, MultiChoice Southern Africa Regional Director, expressed enthusiasm for the new cohort: “While we’ve made some adjustments to the programme, these changes have created greater efficiencies without compromising on the quality of training. MultiChoice is deeply committed to developing African film and television talent across the continent.”
At the heart of the MTF Academy’s mission is a dedication to empowering young African creators to tell authentic African stories. “Our goal is to grow the African film and television industry so audiences can see themselves reflected in the content they love,” Omotosho said.
Selection into the MTF Academy is highly competitive, with students chosen through a rigorous multi-stage application process. Throughout the course, participants receive hands-on instruction from leading industry professionals and culminate their training by collaborating on a student film that will be broadcast on MultiChoice channels, including Zambezi Magic.
“This year’s intake has already demonstrated remarkable talent and creativity,” Omotosho noted. “We’re confident they will inspire African audiences for decades to come, and that the future of the industry is bright in their hands.”
As the eighth cohort to enter the programme, these young creatives join a growing family of MTF alumni who have gone on to build successful careers within MultiChoice and beyond — a testament to the academy’s vital role in shaping Africa’s media future.
